TBF Challenge Structure Suggestions? [May. 9th, 2008|10:17 pm]

Hey, all... I'm stoked to see so much activity on here lately, as well as some new members trickling in to join the fun.

I'm looking for some input from folks on the rules -- particularly the whole announcement-challenge-response structure. We've had some (technically rulebreaking but still cool) challenges of new types pop up -- instant challenges under cuts, or challenges with fuses longer than a week (obviating the need for a week-heads-up announcement), etc. -- and i'd like to find ways to incorporate them into TBF officially.

I'd like to open up some discussion of how we can relax the rules of TBF but still have just enough structure to encourage the whole spirit of the thing (that being motivation to write something quickly without regard for the self-critical quality-checking that prevents many of us from writing in the first place).

Thoughts? Please comment and tell us what works for you on TBF and what doesn't.

Non-standard challenge. Post it early as tonight or late as a week from now. [May. 9th, 2008|05:30 pm]

I was just thinking about the Uncanny Valley again, and really enjoying scaring myself with the idea of "what if I was talking to a person, liking them, and after a while of being totally without any doubt they were human, I saw one of those telltale notches on their wrist, or a movement of their eye, and suddenly knew they were a construct." WOoo! Nice and scary!! : )

I challenge anyone who is into this sort of thing to write a short story about an encounter like this, where you spend a relatively long time with a person, having a positive encounter with them and connecting on an emotional level, and then you suddenly realize they are a mechanism.

After brushing up on the above idea, please feel free to write a story -- enjoy!

I'm deliberately posting a challenge so close to the last fuse-out time in the spirit of "keeping the momentum".

In that same spirit, i challenge you thusly:

Rules: Valid responses to this challenge must somehow "keep the momentum" of any other piece previously-to-now posted to timebombfiction. This can mean writing a "sequel", carrying a central theme or key characters forward, or some other justifiable interpretation of the author's devise. Valid responses must include a link to the source piece, and either implicitly or explicitly clear indication of your interpretation of how it "keeps the momentum" of it.

Guideline: Do whatever it takes to write something! (I know, i'm guilty of missing the last challenge already -- i forgot the deadline. I'll prob'ly post a late one just for fun.)

Time Limit: Fuse on this one is just over 60 hours; valid responses must by posted by 5:00 AM EDT this Monday, May 5th.

Go forth and fiction...

...fast!

I'm sorry I haven't participated in the past few challenges. I still love you guys. I just haven't been able to find the mental space lately. Planning L's birthday party and trying to buy a house and now I've got to get the car into the shop.

But for all you who keep writing: Keep up the fine work. :)

Challenge #9: The way of the Gun [Apr. 28th, 2008|11:14 am]

first, to get you in the moodCollapse )

Rule: "*click*" The piece should incorporate a gun, and in particular the gun not firing when expected to.

Guideline: As usual, length isn't that important. Aim for what you're comfortable with, I'd suggest spending no more than an hour on writing.

Time limit: 3 days. Post your response by Thursday noon, or face the wrath of the late tag.

Tips: Why wouldn't a gun fire? That's your choice. Out of ammo, hang fire, blanks (whereby the gun goes bang but there is no bullet) are all ok. Use of onomatopoeia is optional. This is about a gun, so while it would be quite an achievement to figure out a way for say, a bow or a knife to be unexpectedly out of ammo, those don't count.
